We suggest training your spam filter database first thing in the morning BEFORE you have picked up your email by opening Outlook or Thunderbird or whatever email client you use. If you are persistent and follow these instructions for 5 or more days, you will improve the effectiveness of your spam filter. The filter is trained using the emails in your inbox on the server that are waiting to be picked up by your email client, so it is important to do this before you get your mail.
Before picking up your email, login to the Email Control Panel at http://my.skyrunner.net. See instructions above to access your Email Control Panel.
Click on the Spam Filter icon. At the top of the next screen will be a tab that says "Training". Click it.
You will see a list of all the emails currently in your inbox. If there are none, you have probably already picked up all email with Outlook You will have to try again another time before collecting your email from the server.
Go down the list of emails and click the checkbox next to every one that you know is spam. Once you have clicked all the spam emails, return to the top of the screen and click "It's Spam". This will mark all the emails with a red exclamation point, and show with the little gear icon that they are all now known to the spam database. Now click the checkbox next to all the good (ham) email. It is equally important to train the filter about good email! Once you've marked all the good messages, return to the top and click "It's Not Spam". This will mark all the valid messages with green checkmarks. If necessary, go to the next screen full of emails and repeat the process.
Now you can exit and collect your email with Outlook or another email client. Note that you will still receive the emails you marked as spam, as they were already in your inbox. However, by training the spam database, similar emails are more likely to be rejected when they arrive.
You must train the database with at least 200 spam emails and at least 100 ham or good emails for it to begin to be effective. The more training you do, the more efficient the spam filter will become.
NOTE: If at the top of your Spam filter training page, under "Info" you see that the "Messages learned" shows a large number of non-spam messages, and very few or no spam messages, you may wish to click the "Clear Spam Filter Database" icon at the top of the page. This empties the database so you can start training from scratch. In some instances, the spam filter assumes that messages are non-spam, thereby corrupting the database. By clearning the database, you clear the filter so that it will only make assessments based on what you train it to do.
